The doshas are three fundamental energies or principles that govern various physiological and psychological functions in the body and mind. These doshas—Vata, Pitta, and Kapha—reflect combinations of the five elements (ether, air, fire, water, and earth) and are responsible for maintaining balance and harmony within the body.
Each individual has a unique constitution (prakriti) that is determined by the proportion of these doshas present at the time of their birth. The constitution influences an individual's physical characteristics, temperament, preferences, and susceptibility to imbalances. Imbalances in the doshas (vikriti) are believed to be the root cause of disease and health issues.
